Sandy Kahrod is a basketmaker based in West Bromwich, on the western edge of Birmingham.
She works across traditions like English willow, Japanese bamboo, neolithic braiding and fine skein work, to explore migration, class and land. Her Jatt ancestors farmed in the Punjab, where baskets were the tools of working lives. She grew up in the Black Country, surrounded by poverty, where a stable job mattered more than art.
The first basket she made felt like something her hands had already done.
